Another Letter to My Followers
The one in which I eat my words.
Hi everyone —
I’ll keep this brief.
This past autumn, I made a necessary decision for my mental health and well-being to quit Medium. The break allowed me to focus on other things when I badly needed to, get my head out of the addiction cycle of manically checking my stats, and think through what I want my Internet presence to be about.
Last week, I tried to re-emerge onto the Internet via Substack, but I wasn’t fully aware of the differences between Substack and Medium as writing platforms. Substack seems to be more geared towards people who direct readers in through other platforms, i.e. social media. As much as I hate the urge I feel on Medium to pander or write clickbait headlines, I’ll take that over using Twitter any day. Medium, flawed though it may be, toxic though it can become, does afford us writers a unique opportunity to expand our readership without having to become #influencers.
So, uh, here I am again. At least the break gave me the chance to get more comfortable with writing for an actual audience and be more intentional about how I want to use the great privilege of your readership.
