As an aside, this is also why Ayn Rand's discussion of "rational self-interest" and all unfortunate philosophical trends that follow from it are a load of dingo's kidneys. What self are you, exactly? Not only within human community or overarching concepts of identity, but say you're struggling to quit an addiction, you have two distinct self-interests who want distinctly different behavior from you. No self is the only rational way to understand the self, and the no-self's rational self interest can be literally anything you want and all wants are conditioned and context-specific and none of it is very objective after all. In conclusion, I hate Ayn Rand and I like this essay.
